Help "The Band Play On"
The DeKalb Municipal Band’s future funding from the City of DeKalb is in jeopardy. The city is looking at several budget cuts and, honestly, the band is on the chopping block. The City of DeKalb has supported the band from the very beginning, since 1854; now that funding may cease. There are some wonderful things the City of DeKalb does for the community: the police department, the fire department, public works, and so much more. The Municipal Band is also one of those wonderful things. In its 164 year history, the band has never been silent. It is one of the oldest municipal bands in the United States and the only municipal band that has played continuously for 164 straight years. The band gives so much positive exposure to the city through our summer concert series, our website, our Facebook page and our band is heard and seen around the world though our YouTube channel. The band needs to play on, not just for our supportive concert goers, but for the City of DeKalb itself. We are a bright spot in the community, which at times, seems not so bright.
Though the future funding of the band from the City of DeKalb may not continue, the band’s goal is to live on for many years to come. To keep the “Band Playing On” we need your help. We started the “Band Plays On” movement after our last concert of the season on August 21st. Thanks to many wonderful donations we has received over $12,000.00 to help the band continue. Those of you who have already contributed to the band’s future, we deeply thank you! Those of you who haven’t there’s still time!
In order to put on our summer concert series our budget is $53,000.00 or approximately $4,000.00 per concert. The city of DeKalb’s contribution in 2018 was $43,250.00 and we truly thank them for their support this year and in the years preceding. The time has come for us to take the reigns and, with your help, continue this wonderful icon in the community.
Here is how you can help. Make your tax deductible donation to The DeKalb Municipal Band and send it to the DeKalb County Community Foundation, 475 DeKalb Avenue, Sycamore, IL 60178. Any amount will be accepted and so appreciated! Our goal is $53,000.00. We have already received over $12,000.00. We are almost a fourth of the way there and, with your support, we will achieve our goal.
Thank you for helping the “Band Play On!”
